Stephen St. Several women, some of whom identified themselves as employees or former employees of exotic-dance clubs, club owner Jerry Hamman, his attorney and others urged the West Virginia Alcohol Beverage Control Administration to issue the licenses for Taboo at 18 Royal Crest Drive near Martinsburg, as well as Vixens Gentlemen's Club at Winchester Ave. In the four years I have been going to these clubs, I've not seen none of these people getting DUIs or drug problems, either. A longtime club employee also presented state alcohol-control spokesman Gary "Gig" Robinson with a folder containing signatures of people who favor the private-club applications.
After quickly reviewing the petitions, Robinson said that addresses weren't attached to the signatures, and a number of them couldn't be verified because they are not legible. A number of women who said they worked at the clubs told Robinson that they were able to provide for their children and families as a result of working at the establishments.
Cynthia Beach, a bartender at Taboo, said the club's employees are professional, but don't have control over customers' "free will. Beach, a Pennsylvania resident, said the area has been known for its exotic-dance clubs and Hollywood Casino at Charles Town W. Races, and noted they provided a boost to the local economy. Look at those facts. Beach said she has felt safe working at the club, and the effort to stop a few bad people would result in hurting a lot more.
